Ocado has low levels of food waste thanks to our efficient operating model. Our clever technology, used to forecast demand, and shorter supply chain means we only order from suppliers what we need. This both minimises waste and increases freshness, as our products don't sit around on a shelf. Over 80% of orders are sold to customers before they arrive!
Where food is not sold, we redistribute it as efficiently as possible and provide our community food partners with fresh products - 95% of surplus donations come from produce and fruit.
It is redistributed to our staff canteens, staff sales, local charities and Company Shop. The small percentage of inedible food that cannot be redistributed is sent to Biogen for anaerobic digestion, where the Biogas produced helps power our warehouse in Dordon.
Our aspiration is to achieve industry-leading levels of no-to-low food waste, and we will continue to optimise forecasts, ordering and promotions to reduce it.
